The Art of the Handwritten Note - Margaret Shepherd

Are you afraid of writing handwritten notes?  A little overwhelmed at the thought of sitting down and writing these notes?  You know they make a difference but when faced with writing them would rather go walk on hot coals?  Then this book is definitely for you!

This book is chocked full of ideas and has been a great resource when I am at a loss as what to write in a note.  Ok, I letting out my little secret and sharing this book.  This book covers the simple thank you, sympathy and invitations.  Not only does it give you the DO's it also shares with what you shouldn't put in your handwritten notes.

Hand written notes are a wonderful way to get someone's attention and be remembered!  I really like using them with For Sale By Owners, having success getting them to call me after they get a hand written note.  Most agents just send a form letter, my handwritten note stands out and something that is kept.   That is what is important -- to be remembered now isn't it?

If handwritten notes is something you struggle with, pick up this book!  You will be glad that you did!

What a timelly post.  I'm starting to write thank you notes on a consistant basis.  I never thought there would be a how to book on the subject.  I'll have to add it to my library.

Handwritten notes are the only way to convey sincerity I think. I write them just to let people know I was thinking of them ( hoping to see them this summer when they come to the coast, knowing they have a birthday coming up -then you dont miss it! etc..)

Lisa - Check Amazon.com.  Colleen - my handwriting is atrocious after years of using the PC - what does the book say about the importance of legibility?

Colleen - a great reminder of the power of handwritten notes!  I have been writing more, and on a more consistent basis these days.  So important to the recipients!

Hi Colleen-I agree handwritten notes are most remembered! This book sounds great, I will be off to Barnes and Noble tomorrow. Thanks for sharing!

I agree that people think very highly of hand written notes.  When you get a hand written note you know that someone took the time to personally think about your while they were writting it.  A mass mailing is something that usually will end up in the circular file.

I get the best feedback from hand written notes.  I just got an email from a client yesterday.  They travel alot.   Their mail is sent to a daughter that fed ex's the mail when they stop in one place long enough.  Delayed hand written note....and an email from half way around the world that made my day, too.

Handwritten notes are so important.  With technology we get too impersonal at times.

Kengo -- You are welcome, it is amazing how useful so many of these books are to your business...

Herb -- I just know how great it feels when I get a hand written note!

Chris -- so simple and so effective!

Randy -- some of us depend on the electronic stuff too much.  Hand written notes, phone calls definately have a huge effect.

Ann -- I will do that....

Thanks for the reminder.  I always get great feedback from my handwritten notes.  It is such an easy way to stay in touch with my database- so why is it so difficult to do it regularly?  I am excited to check out this book!

I come from the old school.  I hand write the addresses on my newsletter.  Some agents say that it is a waste of time.  I don't believe that.  I put myself on the other end.  I usually respond if it is handwritten.  Thank you for your article

A very timely post.  Thanks for the "heads up" on the book.  Handwritten notes make people feel special.

Hi Collen- I just wanted to let you know I picked up this book today and I haven't put it down! I just wanted to thank you again!

Collen, come on- if you're swamped for time as it is, the handwritten envelope compels them to at least OPEN it, don't you think?  Shortcut people probably won't do so well with this program, but it's a reminder for when times are a bit slower- a nice touch.

Hi Colleen. I'm just stopping in to say hello! Handwritten notes do work fantastically well :) Peopl appreciate the personal touch.

Colleen  - I'll look forward to adding this book to my library. I couldn't agree with you more  - people seem to value it even more now that it's so "rare"to get something personal - I too hand address my newsletters to 500+ each month and people always want to tell me how to do it with labels, etc but ironically people that receive it go out of their way to tell us that they always read our newletter- we also add personal info and fun stuff not just real estate info.

I do send between 100-300 cards, thank you's & hand written ackowledgements each month. Short but sweet. We've seen those who receive them call us to do business - we've taken 4 listing in the last week from this group of people.

Have a great weekend. Keep the great tips coming.

P.S. Colleen, Would you mind teling me how did you imbed those County resource lists - they look great?

Posted by Clearwater Real Estate Pinellas Florida Condos & Homes for Sale- Cyndee Haydon (Charles Rutenberg Realty) over 2 years ago

Dianne -- There is something very personal about that.   I actually worked for a team that had newsletters that went out with the typed address except for those that we were working with which those would get a hand written address and some sort of update hand written inserted.

Judi -- very special indeed!

Suzanne -- Glad I could be of assistance.   It comes in handy every once in awhile...

Laurie -- Hopefully you will be doing so much business you can hire this out...  I know one Realtor who pays a woman to address envelopes for him and to put stamps on cards because he gets such great feedback.  The woman on a fixed income appreciates the little extra income.

Mark -- Great to see you around...

Cyndee -- I did them in a Microsoft Word table, and cut and paste them into posts.... It took a lot of work to find all that information and thought they would be helpful....

Colleen,

Great Post!  I make it a point to write atleast 5 handwritten notes a week.  I generally choose a specific group each week, i.e. "FSBO Prospects, Sphere of Influence, Past clients, current clients".  Handwritten notes can be very powerful.

Great post, Colleen!  I have found that I do better with this when I keep a package of notecards AND STAMPS in my bag at all times.  When I meet with someone or think of them during my day, the cards and stamps are close at hand.  Write the note right away and stamp it - my good intentions never make it to reality if I don't do it right away.

For those of you personally addressing your newsletters, here is a tip one of my clients uses.  She always sends her newsletters with labels, but she goes through and puts a personal message on a large percentage of the newsletters.  For instance, a newsletter about curb appeal may have a message to an owner like "I showed a home in your neighborhood last week and saw your tulips in the front flowerbed - they are gorgeous!"  It does take time to go through the newsletters to do this, but it is time well spent because of the personal nature of the messages.

Can't wait to pick up this book!

I am just now starting to do this and I am finding it very good PR. I am standing out from the crowd. I will pick up the book you recommended. Also, I keep notecards, stamps and index cards with the people I am writing to all in a small file that I take with me everywhere. It makes it easy to keep up with.
