Upcoming January 29, 2008 meeting regarding the Tommie Barfield Historic Home.

Marco Island is rich in history, and the Otter Mound Preserve sits right next to what was once home to Jim and Tommie Barfield. Most residents know Tommie Barfield's name because our Elementary School is named for her. Such an important figure in the development of Marco Island it just seems right that her home be preserved for future generations. In this age of tear downs on Marco Island to build bigger and better, we are losing a bit of history quickly.

Marco Island Home to Great Fishing!

 

A popular past-time on Marco Island for those that live and visit Marco Island is fishing. In fact you can consider it one of the most popular recreational activities here on Marco Island, especially if your home is on one of the 200 miles of canals on Marco Island. Because of Marco Island's location fishermen can enjoy both Freshwater Fishing and Saltwater Fishing year round. 

Just what every Marco Island Resident doesn't want to see. Another negative headline involving Marco Island. Recently I wrote about the Madeira and now this NY Times Headline today...

Mortgage Fraud hurts real people and it is scary to think that Florida leads the nation in this crime. Marco Island properties are part of Federal prosecutors indictment of 31 people in connection with a mortgage fraud scheme involving at least 28 properties in South Florida and fraudulent loans totaling more than $14.2 million.

Lessons on Blogging from the Simpsons?

A little while ago I posted Discussion Point | Does Article Size Matter? which discussed the size of articles.  Most that commented said they liked the shorter posts....  Why do I mention this, because I have a link to a very long article that might be of interest to writers here at ActiveRain.   And it appears this will be a long article too!

I have long been trying to get members to reach outside of ActiveRain and explore and learn from other places.  Some have as a result of the Laurie Manny Challenge (And the Winners Are....) and many have benefited.   So many wonderful ideas were brought back from that contest.   If you are new to ActiveRain, you might want to go check out the posts in this challenge, there was some great writing in there.

The Simpsons: Lessons on Blogging was written by Ben Cook over at the Blogging Experiment.   Wow!   Go read the post before you read the rest of my post.

What great advice!  I especially could relate to the points he makes in this article:

How does that relate to what is happening here at ActiveRain. 

Plans Will Fail - just look at the number of things we have tried around here...  What ever happened to the Active Rain Flat Stanley Project?  Anyone remember Member Spotlight?  Both my failures, or was it really more a point of evolution?  The interest in the Flats dwindled but the increase in Localism content skyrocketed.  Sometimes you start one thing but create a whole different result. 

Get the Community Involved -  Week in Review, The numerous contests that happen here, the fact that we all have grown so much by sharing our knowledge here.  The fact that we embrace new members.  The countless friendships that have evolved over time.
